Suzanne Sperl
artist, photographer, writer, teacher
A graduate of the Savannah College of Art & Design (BFA, Video/Film, 1995), Suzanne has always had an interest in capturing images of the world around her. Her career path wound around many facets, from the healing arts as an LMT to a more corporate direction in public relations, before leading her to become an art teacher. It was walking into the world of education where Suzanne felt most at home. She completed her teaching certification and MEd in Curriculum and Instruction from Arizona State University in 2002 and began working as an art teacher at a middle school in Phoenix, Arizona before being offered a job teaching art/video for DoDEA. Suzanne was recently awarded the 2010 Mediterranean District Teacher of the Year for DoDEA.
It is most important to her to maintain her own level of personal creativity to fill her own creative needs but to also serve as an inspiration to her classes to illustrate that an artist must allow for avenues for creativity in their lives. She works hard to balance this need for creativity against her most important jobs in life as a mother, wife and teacher.
She gathers inspiration from the world around her - striving to find the extraordinary in the ordinary and everyday. Her canvas shifts from that of mixed media paintings which incorporate her poetry to photography.
